FIFA Rankings: A Disappointing Start To The Year For Nigeria’s Super Eagles

The Super Eagles are yet to play this year, but it is still far from an ideal start after they dropped one place in the latest FIFA rankings

Nigeria have dropped to 35th position in the first FIFA rankings released in 2021. The three-time African champions finished 2020 as the 34th best nation in the world and fourth-ranked nation in Africa.

However, they are now fifth on the continent after being overtaken by Morocco, who moved up two places to 33rd in the world rankings.

The Super Eagles played four matches in 2020, but they failed to win any of the games, which contributed to their fall in recent rankings.

Gernot Rohr’s men lost to Algeria while they played a 1-1 draw against Tunisia in two international friendly games played in October.

The Super Eagles then blew a four-goal lead in the first leg of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sierra Leone before playing a goalless draw in the return leg.

It’s not the best way to start the year for Rohr’s men, but they have the chance to turn around the situation when they play the Benin Republic and Lesotho in their final Afcon qualifiers next month.
