Super Eagles watch: Real Sociedad target Nigeria star rejected by Crystal Palace

Super Eagles star Christantus Uche could be heading for a fresh start in Spain after his difficult loan spell at Crystal Palace came to an end, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 23-year-old Nigerian international has become one of Real Sociedad's top transfer targets, with the Basque club preparing a new offer for the versatile Getafe star, according to Fichajes.

As per the reports, Real Sociedad have made enquiries about Uche and are considering a loan deal with an option to make the move permanent at the end of the campaign. Having made previous attempts at signing the former Ceuta star, the club believes this summer offers a better chance to complete the deal after the Nigerian returned to Getafe following the end of his loan in England.

Getafe president Ángel Torres has already made the club's position clear. He confirmed that Getafe are willing to sell Uche if the right offer arrives. The Spanish club need to raise money because of La Liga's strict financial rules, making player sales an important part of balancing their budget.

Uche's contract includes a €25 million release clause, but Real Sociedad believe that price is too high. Instead, they hope Getafe's financial situation will allow both clubs to agree on a lower transfer fee.

The opportunity to play European football next season is another reason for optimism. Real Sociedad believe the chance to feature at the Anoeta Stadium and compete in Europe could persuade Uche to push for the transfer. His current market value is estimated to be between €12 million and €15 million.

However, Sociedad are not alone in the race. Atletico Madrid, Real Betis and AC Milan are also keeping close tabs on the Nigerian, while Premier League clubs Wolves and Brentford are monitoring his situation ahead of the summer transfer window.

Why Crystal Palace walked away from deal for Super Eagles star

Uche's time at Crystal Palace never went according to plan despite arriving with high expectations in September 2025.

The loan agreement included an obligation to buy worth between €18 million and €20 million, but only if he started at least 10 Premier League matches. That target was never close to being achieved.

Instead, Uche made 14 Premier League appearances, but every one of them came from the bench. He played only 169 league minutes, averaging about 12 minutes per match, and finished the campaign without a single Premier League goal or assist.

His brightest moments came in the UEFA Europa Conference League, where he scored twice. Even then, Palace manager Oliver Glasner later left him out of the squad for the knockout rounds.

Several factors reportedly contributed to his struggles. Glasner's preferred 3-4-3 system did not suit Uche's flexible style of play. Although naturally a midfielder, Uche has impressed at Getafe by playing as a winger, attacking midfielder and centre-forward under José Bordalás. Palace's settled attacking line also made it difficult for him to break into the starting team.

The relationship between player and manager became even more strained in May 2026 when Uche gave an emotional interview about his situation.

“I hope to make you proud whenever I do get the chance to play, but I know maybe it won't happen again because the coach doesn't like me.”

“I hope to make you proud whenever I do get the chance to play, but I know maybe it won't happen again because the coach doesn't like me.”

Glasner later responded publicly before one of Palace's European semi-final matches. The Palace boss admitted the Nigerian felt he was not trusted but insisted that places in the team must be earned through strong performances and good discipline.

By then, Uche had gone almost two months without playing a competitive match for Palace. With the mandatory clause no longer achievable, the Premier League club decided against signing him permanently, sending him back to Getafe.

Now, with Real Sociedad pushing hard to bring him to San Sebastián and several other clubs showing interest, the Super Eagles midfielder could soon have another opportunity to revive his career.
