The Cage is back: Soccernet.ng revives Nike’s iconic 3v3 tournament with today’s biggest stars

In the summer of 2002, Nike launched one of the most memorable football campaigns ever made. The Cage threw the world's best players into a steel-walled arena for raw, stripped-back 3v3 matches, with Eric Cantona as referee.

First goal wins. No second chance. Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Thierry Henry, Francesco Totti, Roberto Carlos, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Patrick Vieira, Rio Ferdinand, Luis Enrique and Hidetoshi Nakata were among the legends who stepped inside. The losing team was eliminated on the spot. It was football at its most primal, and it became an instant cultural landmark.

Now, more than two decades later, The Cage is back — and Africa is front and centre.

The Cage Returns for the World Cup

Soccernet.ng is bringing the concept back to life as part of a coordinated editorial series spanning nine partner platforms: Sports Mole, Top Mercato, Afrik-Foot (France, Nigeria and South Africa), Trivela.com.br, UmDois Esportes and Al Aire Libre.

The format stays true to the original DNA: sixteen trios enter a knockout bracket, running from the Round of 16 through the quarter-finals, semi-finals and a grand final. One loss and you are out.

The lineup reads like a who's who of modern football — and African talent is woven through every corner of it. Victor Osimhen anchors Rosario Rumble alongside Messi and Xavi Simons. Achraf Hakimi lines up with Mbappé and Enzo Fernández in Atlas Tango, a trio that practically represents a continent on its own. Kalidou Koulibaly brings the experience to Viking Voltage alongside Haaland and Raphinha. Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah reunite as Red Redemption, reigniting memories of Anfield's greatest era. And in Soweto Samba, Lyle Foster carries the hopes of an entire footballing nation.

Fans Choose the Winners of Every Match

Each trio carries a unique identity and a carefully chosen name that reflects the cultural roots and playing styles of its members. Generation ¡Olé! pairs Yamal with Cole Palmer and Désiré Doué. Favela Royale brings together Vinicius, De Bruyne and Nuno Mendes. Balkan Ballers unites Modrić with Endrick and Patrik Schick in one of the tournament's most unpredictable combinations. And then there are the Final Bosses — Cristiano Ronaldo's trio, and a name that says everything.

The outcome of every match rests entirely in the hands of the fans. At each round of the tournament, readers across Soccernet.ng and its partner platforms will vote for the trio they believe would win the clash. No algorithms, no editorial picks. The community decides who advances and who goes home. It is a pure, democratic bracket where passion, loyalty and heated debate settle the score.

The Cage door is open. Africa has more than a few candidates to walk out of it. Who do you back?
