Nigeria's Super Eagles trade tackles with Zimbabwe later today in the semi-finals of the 2026 Unity Cup invitational tournament in London, Soccernet.ng reports.
The Super Eagles, as defending champions, will be favourites to secure victory over their African rivals. That is largely because the West African giants are ranked 26th in the world, while Zimbabwe sit 104 places below them in the FIFA rankings.
Historically, this is a fixture that has favoured Nigeria more often than not, although in recent years the Super Eagles have found the Warriors a much tougher nut to crack.
The first meeting between the two countries came 45 years ago in a friendly in Salisbury, Zimbabwe. Interestingly, the Warriors won that encounter 2-0 against a Nigeria side that were reigning African champions at the time.
That remains the only defeat Nigeria have suffered in nine meetings with Zimbabwe, with the Super Eagles winning four and drawing four of the other eight encounters.

During the qualifying series for the 1990 Africa Cup of Nations, the Super Eagles claimed a 4-1 aggregate victory, helped by a convincing 3-0 win at the Liberty Stadium in Ibadan. Henry Nwosu and Etim Esin were among the goalscorers on the day.
Both teams met again during the qualifying campaign for the 2006 World Cup. The Super Eagles secured their first victory on Zimbabwean soil in September 2004 courtesy of a 3-0 win inside the National Sports Stadium in Harare. First-half goals from Julius Aghahowa and Joseph Enakarhire, followed by a second-half penalty from Yakubu Aiyegbeni, were enough to silence the 45,000 fans in attendance.
The Super Eagles showed no mercy in the return fixture thanks in no small part to an Obafemi Martins brace, as the former African champions cruised to a 5-1 win in Abuja. It remains the biggest winning margin in meetings between Nigeria and Zimbabwe.
For the first time in AFCON history, Nigeria and Zimbabwe met at the tournament proper in 2006, with the Super Eagles strolling to a comfortable 2-0 victory. The Warriors held firm for the best part of an hour before two goals in three minutes from Christian Obodo and John Obi Mikel broke their resistance.

Tougher Warriors for Super Eagles
Interestingly, that remains Nigeria’s last victory in this fixture, as the following three meetings have all ended in draws.
The two sides first played out a goalless draw in an international friendly at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba in 2019.
The Super Eagles then needed a late Kelechi Iheanacho equaliser to rescue a draw during the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
Victor Osimhen gave Nigeria a second-half lead in the return leg last year, only for Tawanda Chirewa to score a stoppage-time equaliser and force the game to end 1-1. Nigeria would ultimately have qualified for the World Cup had the Super Eagles secured all three points from that encounter.

Recalling that fixture during his press conference ahead of this Unity Cup clash, head coach Eric Chelle insisted the Super Eagles created enough chances to win the game comfortably.
“Zimbabwe is a great team, a great team with strong players. If you want to talk about our last game, you need to talk not only about the result. Because if you see the result, you will say aha. But if you watch the game, we were supposed to win the game by at least 98 percent.
“Definitely, Zimbabwe is a great team. They come with a lot of motivation. They want to win.”
However, none of the key players from that match are expected to feature in London, with Wilfred Ndidi and Moses Simon both set to miss the encounter.
Chelle has instead invited several new faces, with Femi Azeez and Arthur Okonkwo among those in line to make their Super Eagles debuts.
The match will be played at The Valley, the traditional home of Charlton Athletic, with kick-off set for 7:30 pm Nigerian time.
