Anthony Nwakaeme plays up Trabzonspor title chances after defeating Galatasaray

Three-time Israeli Champion Anthony Nwakaeme has played up Trabzonspor's chances of winning the Turkish Super Lig after they sealed a stunning 2-1 win over Galatasaray last night, Soccernet.ng reports.

Now one of the senior team leaders at 37-years-old, Nwakaeme played 79 minutes against Okan Buruk's side at Papara park, setting up the winner for Christian Nwaiwu.

Paul Onuachu had initially broken the deadlock inside three minutes with a brilliant solo finish before Wilfred Singo levelled the scores three minutes after the restart.

Nwakaeme plays up Trabzonspor's title chances vs Galatasaray

Galatasaray were without their star striker Victor Osimhen, who's still recovering from a forearm fracture, which he just operated on. In his place, Mauro Icardi started, but the Argentine didn't produce the desired effect.

Trabzonspor's victory takes them to within a point of Galatasaray on the Turkish Super Lig table, and Nwakaeme believes anything is possible with seven league games left to play.

“It was a very important match. We were aware of that. Galatasaray is a good team,” the one-cap Super Eagles star said in quotes revealed by Fanatik.

“We've been working to win all week. We knew we'd get a lot closer to our opponent if we won. We are very happy for our city and our team.

“It wasn't a surprise environment. Everyone who didn't play wanted to win. That's the spirit of being a family. That's what happened today.

“Every game counts. We've taken the first and most important step. We've got six weeks. We'll start with Alanyaspor.

“We'll go to the game, and we're gonna try to win every game,” the former Al-Fahya winger concluded.

Paul Onuachu, the league's leading goalscorer, also weighed in on his side's title dream, urging them to win their remaining games in the run-in.

“We really fought in front of our fans, and we put everything into winning. We respect Galatasaray; we should, they have very good players.

“We've been paid for our work. We put everything we could into winning, and we won. We've got some tough games ahead of us.

“Every game is separate; we'll look at a game, and we'll go out to win them all. Göztepe is a strong team that can score points from Galatasaray.

“We'll win and move forward. We'll see what happens together,” the Super Eagles striker concluded.

Onuachu has scored 22 league goals this season and is the frontrunner for the league's golden boot award, eight goals above Basaksehir's Eldor Shomurodov.
