Nigeria former U17 player recieves one year imprisonment in Denmark for sexual assault

The F.C. Copenhagen player from Nigeria has been accused of sexual assault and might be deported as a result of the incident.

Former youth winger for Nigeria, who participated in the 2019 U-17 World Cup in Brazil, Akinkunmi Amoo, has been handed a one-year jail sentence for sexual assault, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 21-year-old received the verdict on Friday in relation to charges brought against him for sexually assaulting two women in Denmark. He intends to contest the judgment delivered by the Danish court, according to Nigerian Journalist Osasu Obayiuwana.

Meanwhile, according to the Danish news outlet, the prominent football player faced trial for indecent assault, attempted rape, and rape in a non-intercourse sexual relationship. Three women testified and shared their experiences involving the footballer.

The prosecutor sought a 21-month prison sentence and deportation, but the defendant was ultimately sentenced to one year in prison.

He will also face deportation from Denmark, with a six-year entry ban. Additionally, he is required to cover the costs of the case. Nevertheless, he has decided to appeal the decision in the High Court.

However, the footballer presents a different perspective on these matters. According to his testimony, one of the women, who also accused him of misconduct, and a male mutual acquaintance—both fans of the club he represents—tried to extort 30,000 to 40,000 kroner from him.

He claimed the man accused him of rape and encouraged him to pay the sum to the woman as a “bribe,” as reiterated by his defence attorney in court.

Throughout the proceedings, the well-known football player consistently pleaded not guilty to all charges brought forward by the prosecutor, encompassing indecent assault, attempted rape, and rape in a non-intercourse sexual relationship.
