Done Deal: Forgotten Super Eagles Star Onazi Joins Lithuanian Champions

The former Lazio midfield ace has been without a club since mutually terminating his contract with Danish side SönderjyskE on January 5

FK Zalgiris Vilnius have completed the signing of Nigeria international Ogenyi Eddy Onazi, the Lithuanian top-flight club has confirmed with a statement on their official website.

No further details were provided by the club or the player regarding the financial details and length of the contract signed by the former Lazio man.

FK Zalgiris Vilnius won the Lithuanian A Lyga last season and will feature in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League for the 2021-2022 season.

Born in Jos 28 years ago, Onazi came to prominence as a crucial member of the Golden Eaglets team that finished as runner-up to Switzerland at the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup on home soil.

After making his senior breakthrough at Lazio, the central midfielder made his international debut in 2012 in an African Cup of Nations qualification match against Liberia.

Onazi has since amassed another 50 international caps for Nigeria and was a prominent member of the Stephen Keshi-led Super Eagles team that lifted the 2013 Afcon trophy in South Africa.

A product of My People FC, Onazi has represented Nigeria at two World Cup tournaments, first in 2014 and then at Russia in 2018.

The 28-year-old has, however, not featured for the three-time African champions since the Super Eagles lost 1-2 to a Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina side at Russia 2018.

A 2013 Coppa Italia winner with Lazio, for whom he made 110 appearances and scored seven goals, Onazi has also played for other European clubs include Trabzonspor, Denizlispor, and SönderjyskE.
